Packing your items takes planning and careful thought. It can make or break your move. It can be stressful enough to pack, so don’t make it more complicated.

Using boxes that are too small

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is to use randomly-sized boxes. It’s a smart idea to recycle old liquor and fruit boxes. However, it makes it more difficult to pack your truck in an easier way.

You can save time sorting everything out by using designated moving boxes. They come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. It is easier to stack boxes one on top of the other, and it will make it easy to arrange things when you unpack.

    Too heavy boxes

A common mistake is to pack heavy items in one container. It not only makes it difficult to transport the box, but it also compromises its integrity.

Have you ever seen someone carrying a heavy box only to find that suddenly, objects are falling from the bottom of the box? You can avoid this by distributing heavy items in multiple moving boxes.

    Incorrect packaging

Bubble wrap should be used to protect fragile items like porcelain and picture frames. This will cushion fragile items during transportation and reduce the chance of them breaking.

For heavier and larger items, you should pack them separately. While you are packing it’s important to know how to pack a mirror for moving.

    No labels on boxes

Moving boxes can be identified easier by adding labels. Many people make the mistake of doing it wrong. Always use a white label and a black marker when labeling moving boxes.

The label should be at minimum of 2 inches in height and include a list listing all the contents. The label should always be placed on the side of each box so that you can see what’s inside, even if they are stacked together.

Leave blank spaces in the boxes

Although we do not recommend filling boxes to the brim, it is best to keep the box empty. Blanks fragile items can be damaged if they move around during transport.

Styrofoam can be used to fill in the gaps if you are unable to use other items. The layer of polystyrene provides a cushion that protects your items against movement and displacement during the transition.

    Use plastic bags, not boxes

Plastic bags are sometimes used to store moving boxes. Plastic bags are not designed to protect your belongings and can be a bad idea.

You can ask your local supermarket for used liquor and food boxes if you run out. They are usually free from stores so make sure you take advantage of them.

    Last minute packing your bags

Last-minute packing can be one of the most frustrating things about moving house. You may not only be late for your move, but you might also have to pack everything in moving boxes.

It is best to start packing at least a week ahead and keep essential items, such as toiletries and emergency kits, in separate boxes before you move.

    Too much duct tape

Regular duct tape will not hold boxes together. Use high-quality packing tape 2 inches in width instead. For added stability, start at the bottom with 2-3 layers of tape.

Next, add 2-3 layers to the sides. Professional movers use “H-tape” to attach the sides and center of the flaps. This will ensure that your moving boxes remain sealed and secure during the entire move.

    Get rid of unneeded items

It’s a smart idea to get rid any unnecessary items, such as broken or damaged furniture and old clothes before you begin packing. You can even donate them to charities where they will be used better.
